McGoldrick, Thomas

May 13, 2005
The Late Thomas McGoldrick Thomas McGoldrick of Ennybegs, Killoe died aged 70, leaving his sorrowing wife Nellie, in the care of their seven children whom they dedicated their life to raising. Thomas was a very well known figure in the parish who was renowned as a gentlemen, and a very obliging neighbour. He often helped out those in need of a hand, in many roles in the community who included variously Chairman of Young Emmets Gaelic Football Club, chairman of the Local Community Centre, and also a member of Longford Civil Defence. He was also a well known member of the Fine Gael party in Killoe, having worked at any number of positions within the local branch over his time active in politics. He was a dedicated and hardworking member of any committee or organisation he belong to over the years, spending his time for the good of the community of which he was a part. He was a senior championship medal winner with Killoe in 1960 and was a true dyed in the wool Gaelic Football fan, who believed passionately in the good work that the local GAA club could do in the community. At his very well attended funeral services Thomas was given a guard of honour by members of Emmet Og Football Club, and the local Community Centre Committee. The large crowd was drawn from all over the county, with Thomas having worked for so long as a farmer, and as a rate collector for the County Council in the North Longford Area, and having been well known and universally regarded wherever he went in the county. He was known throughout Longford as a gentleman, who was approachable and genial until he passed away. He was also known to enjoy a jaunt down to the Galway races, which he attended religiously, for the craic and the laughter to be had at the Ballybrit course. His children are perhaps the best reflection of his personality and his dedication to his family. Though they are spread far and wide, they all learned his generosity of spirit from their father. Jim and Mark are still in Ennybegs, Anne is in London, Sandra is in Clonrollagh, Dessie who is in New York and is Treasurer of the Longford Assoc, Sheila who is in Lanesboro, and Aidan who is a Trustee of the New York Longford Assoc. His daughter-in-law, Brid McGoldrick, is well known director of nursing in St Joseph's Mount Carmel Hospital on the Dublin Road in Longford. His funeral was also attended by those of his siblings who are still alive, Thomas having been predeceased by two of his sisters, Joan and Sr Eucharia of the Convent of Mercy, Ballinasloe. He is survived still by St Immaculate (Roisin) Convent of Mercy in Granard, Conchessa Mulligan of Colmcille, who is a Former National School Teacher; Jim McGoldrick who is retired in Dublin and John McGoldrick, retired in Castlebar. Sincere sympathy is expressed to all his family Courtesy of the Longford Leader 13th May 2005
