Dromard club notes

April 24, 2017

Division 1: Dromard 1-10 Killoe 1-11: In round 3 of the league, our senior team was defeated by Killoe in an entertaining game played in good dry conditions in Páirc na nGael on Saturday evening last. Killoe were the better side in the first half and after a flying start opened up a six points to one lead with twenty minutes on the clock. Dromard battled their way into the game and had reduced the margin to three points before Killoe turned over Dromard possession and swept down the field to score a goal. With Killoe well on top in the first half, it took an excellent save from close range by Dromard goalkeeper Seán McNerney to keep Dromard in the game. The home side reduced the arrears before the half-time break with two points to leave the scoreline at 1-6 to 0-5 to the visitors. Dromard improved considerably in the second half with Ronan McEntire winning good possession around midfield. After Dromard had a Francis McGee goal chance deflected for a 45 by Killoe, Pauric Martin picked up loose possession on the edge of the Killoe square and fired an excellent goal low to the net. Substitute James Martin, in his first appearance of the year following an injury, gave Dromard the lead with a fine long-range point, however, the visitors - who were able to score with greater ease throughout the game - landed late points to seal a narrow one-point win. Team: Seán McNerney, David Petit, Niall Vance, Paul McGee, John Sheridan, Diarmuid Masterson, Peter Reynolds, Bryan McCormack, Ronan McEntire, Cian Mimnagh, Bernard Sheridan, Pauric Martin, Francis McGee, Emmet Masterson, James Mimnagh. Sub used: Kevin Kane, James Martin.

Bertie Allen Cup and Division 3: In the Bertie Allen competition, Dromard face Mostrim on Sunday (30th) at 2.30pm in Páirc na nGael. In Division 3, the second squad will aim to build on their positive start to the league when they play Longford Slashers on Monday (1st May) at 3.30pm. All eligible players are asked to attend these games.

Leinster Minor Championship: Congratulations to the Longford minor panel and management on their great win over Wicklow in the first round of the Leinster championship on Saturday last. In particular, well done to Dromard's Joseph Hagan who lined out at centre forward and put in an impressive display over the sixty minutes, scoring from play himself and setting up a number of other Longford scores. Longford's next opponents in the Leinster quarter final will not be known until the qualifier games involving the defeated teams from the first-round matches are played.

Dromard Ladies Club Notes

Results: U/12 lost to St. Brigids, U/16 beat Mostrim and Senior Panel beat Colmcille in Division 2.

Fixtures: Thursday 27th U/14 Away to Mullinalaghta throw in 7pm. Monday 1st May Senior Panel away Carrickedmond in Gold Cup throw in 11.30am,

Reports: Our U/12 side entertained a very good Ardagh side on Monday evening and although we struggled in the game, the girls never let their heads drop and only gave up 1-4 in the second period. When you consider that the majority of last year's successful panel are now too old, which leaves this panel made up with a lot of 9 and even a couple of 8 year olds, to have reached this stage of the season with a record of won 2 and lost 2 speaks volumes for their determination. Keep up the good work and you will only get better as you get older. Team: Louise Tierney, Naoise Hourican, Kate O'Connor, Ruth Gray, Melanie Reilly, Lauren Conboy, Mariah Reilly, Kate Waters, Caoimhe Kearney. Subs (all played): Grace Tierney, Sarah Buchanan, Tara Gray and Niamh Corrigan.

Our U/16 side were also at home to Mostrim and secured a very good win. The most pleasing thing from a Dromard point of view was to see the points being shared throughout the team. After a poor start to their season, this panel now seem to have found their feet and its all to play for in their last fixture in a week's time. Team:- Abi Duffy, Aoife Brady, Kathy Farrell, Gemma Reilly, Clodagh Duffy, Sarah Murphy, Karen McLoughlin, Shauna Hagan, Lauren Holloway, Cathy Conefrey and Aisling Farrell Subs: (all played) Brianna and Siobhan Murphy.

Our Senior Panel got the opportunity to even things up after last week's defeat in the Gold Cup when we once again entertained Colmcille, this time in a Div 2 contest. Although losing by 2 points at halfway, the girls dug deep to run out winners by 3 points.

Birthdays: We wish a Happy Birthday to Eleanor Rabitte who will be 16 on Wednesday and also to Minor player and underage coach Aoife Grimes who turns 17 on Tuesday.
