Matthews, Jim

January 03, 2014
It was with deep regret and sadness that the news of the death of Jim Matthews, Toome was received in the area. Though in failing health for some years his death was a shock to his family and friends. He passed away peacefully in the care of his family on Sunday 22nd December. Jim was a most popular person of a very pleasant and amicable disposition who enjoyed company. Also a religious person his faith and family were of the utmost importance to him. From a farming background, his neighbours could rely on him when help was needed. In the forties when St Columba's were kingpins of Longford football Jim was a valued member of the squad. A nippy half forward he caused many problems for opposition backlines in his day. Holder of two senior championship medals, five Leader cup medals and various other trophies his grandchildren inherited his skill and talent. JJ, Myles and Jason have contributed to the success of the Maroon and White in recent times. His remains were removed to St Columba's Church on Monday evening where they were received by Fr Fitzpatrick. Funeral to the local cemetery on Christmas eve followed con celebrated Mass. The chief celebrant was Jim's brother-in-law Fr Bernard O'Reilly assisted by Fr. Fitzpatrick, Fr. Simon Cadam and Fr. Thomas Smith. The large attendance on both occasions was a fitting tribute to the popularity of the Matthews family over a wide area. The deceased is survived by his wife Margaret, son John, daughters Paula and Sharon, grandchildren, in laws, nieces and nephews to whom our sympathy is extended. May he rest in peace.
