Hynes, Mary
June 21, 2013
On Sunday night/Monday morning last the entire area was stunned and shocked as the news began to filter through that Mary Hynes of Ferriskil had become seriously ill and had been rushed to Beaumount hospital where she had emergency surgery to save her life. Throughout the whole day Monday and into Tuesday we hoped and prayed that this surgery would be successful and that in time Mary would make a good recovery and that she would be back in her family but unfortunately this was not to be and in the early after noon the dreaded news that Mary had passed to her eternal reward was confirmed.
Mary had celebrated her 5oth birthday just a week before her untimely death and in fact her surprise party, organised by her husband Gerry and their four daughters, was held in Lisryan on Saturday night last and a big crowd of family and friends really enjoyed the night. Mary was the former Mary Cooke from Ross, Mountnugent and almost twenty seven years ago she came to live in Eerriskil following her marriage to Gerry and immediately she became a very popular member of the community as she was involved in everything that's good in the parish and at the time of her death Mary was the joint treasurer of the Ballymore football club and she served on the clubs executive committee for the past few years with great distinction and always made her contribution at meetings and respected everyone's opinion even if she didn't agree with it.
She was also chair person of the parent's association of Cnoc Mhuire and again her contribution was great and she worked very hard for the good of the school. While Mary was very much involved in the community her first priority was her family, her husband
Gerry and their four lovely girls Pauline, Eimear, Siobhan and little Geraldine and her mother in law Grannie Hynes and these she loved with a great love and she was so proud of them.
It is fair to say that Mary knew how to enjoy life and as we would say - When she was out, she was out, and in her daughter, Pauline's words at her funeral, you would hear her before you would see her, as she had a great hearty laugh. Mary enjoyed a good joke and good slag and it was always best to keep the head down because Mary would always have the last word no matter
low hard one tried to get the better of her.
Following her sudden death crowds of people gathered around the family, all wanting to offer their sympathy and all willing to help in what ever way needed but most importantly been there to support. On Wednesday as evening faded to night Mary's remains arrived home and huge crowds gathered to pay their respects to a loving wife,an outstanding mother and a pillar of the community and as we joined the almost silent queu one could only notice the beautiful garden, the blooming flowers all with the track of Mary's hand on them and all displaying great life. As we got nearer the entrance a door opened and little seven year old Geraldine came out with her cousin and expressed surprise at the big crowd outside but later on we learned that Geraldine said she never knew her mammy had so many friends. Throughout Wednesday night and all day Thursday large crowds passed through the family home and each person had his or her own story to tell about Mary and every one admired the lovely home decorated with her many favourite antiques and ornaments which she loved and was so proud of.
Mary was also very proud of her community and was always to the front when help was needed in organising any event, be it for the church, school, football club or any other deserving cause and every year she and her great friend Mary McNerney hosted the coffee morning in aid of the local hospice but of course it was not only a coffee morning as when the ladies were finished in Granard they transfered their kettles to Coolarty and continued on well into the night as Mary kept going until everyone was catered for. On Thursday evening Mary's remains were removed from the family home to her beloved St.Mary's in Granard and as the hearse turned up the main street it was flanked with several guards of honour from all the different organizations that Mary was involved in and was led by the entire Ballymore football club.
Mary's coffin was draped in the Black and Amber of Ballymore and thousands of people heard Fr.Simon speak of the devastation in the parish at Mary's sudden death. Again on Friday afternoon the church was packed to over flowing for the funeral and Fr.Simon
told us of Mary's great faith and how she tended so lovingly to the flowers on the altar when it was her turn and of how happy she was to be able to do it. Following Mass she was laid to rest in Granardkille new cemetery not far from her very dear friend Glen Brady who she missed and mourned so much since his death and all can try and imagine the celebrations when the pair of them met in their heavenly home. We pray that the green sod of Granardkille will rest easily on you Mary and that your family Gerry, Pauline, Siobhan, Eimear and Geraldine along with your sisters Patricia and Alice, brothers Michael, John Joe and Pat, your dear mother in law Grannie Hynes and your many very close friends will be comforted at this sad time.
May she rest in peace.
