Mulleady, Sean (Snr)
August 17, 2012To all who knew him, Séan was a man that loved life, loved the craic, loved to tell a yarn and had a humorous wit. An ever-proud County Longford man, he was a man who could get his point across and who stood behind his beliefs. This energetic, astute father of six represented the Drumlish Electoral Area on Longford County Council. Elected in 1985, he maintained the Mulleady family's political tradition with Fianna Fail, following in the footsteps of his father, Frank. Séan worked hard for the people of Drumlish and north Longford and done his best in every way he could.
Séan was very proud to see his nephew Martin Mulleady follow in his own footsteps and secure a Drumlish seat for Fianna Fail in the 2004 local elections. Speaking to the Longford Leader, Martin Mulleady acknowledged that his uncle had achieved a lot for Drumlish in a time when funds were not plentiful. He also acknowledged the role Séan had played in Fianna Fail politics down through the years. Following a carpentry apprenticeship in 1958, Séan left his beloved Drumlish and went to England where he worked successfully as a skilled carpenter in Leeds.
Such was his dedication to work and his commitment to success, Séan moved up the ranks to foreperson. However, it wasn't until his move to Birmingham that Séan's entrepreneurial spirit began to shine. It was here where Séan set up his carpentry business, where he employed family members, friends and emigrants; and also helped then settle into life around the Birmingham area. This will always be remembered fondly by those he helped. In 1963 he married Sadie and together they had six children. In 1971 Séan and Sadie returned to Ireland to raise their children in Drumlish. With Sadie, he helped guide his children into areas where their true talents were. At that time Séan had plans to build a Saw Mill on his lands in Cloonagh, where now the established Mulleady Group are based. Instead in the early 70s, he became involved in Mulleady Construction, a company established by his late brothers Frankie and Michael and present brother Anthony. Realising there was strength in numbers, the Mulleady brothers joined forces to establish Longford Precast, the first of many successful Mulleady businesses. For Séan, life wasn't all about work. He loved his local GAA club Fr Manning Gaels and the County Longford team and was a supporter at football games and community fundraisers. He loved music, traditional song and dance. He encouraged his children and grandchildren into music, old traditional values and the love of horses. As Drumlish has many well known successful bands and musicians, he was always very proud to support their success. Keeping business local was a key trait in Séan's business dealings. H was also a strong advocate of helping others in their time of need.
Often he cold be found visiting friends and neighbours in hospital. Generosity was another key attribute and Séan's wiliness to help others during financial straits was well known and widely appreciated. It is perhaps most fulfilling to Sean Mulleady Snr by emphasising his love of life, his dedication to the people of Drumlish through politics, his talented carpentry, entrepreneurial and constructional skills. To this well known former county councillor, we bid a fond farewell, missed but not forgotten. The late Séan Mulleady Snr was laid to rest in Drumlish new cemetery following Mass in Drumlish Church on Thursday 26th July. Séan is sadly missed and fondly remembered by his wife Sadie, sons Séan, Michael, Declan and Eamon; daughters Fiona and Collette, brother Anthony, sisters Anna, May and Josephine, aunt Josie and extended family.
