June 17, 2011
All in the parish and surrounding areas were saddened when news broke recently of the death of one of our older parishioners and great characters John McGrath, Parkplace.
John who was in his 87th year, passed away peacefully in the Thomond Lodge nursing home Ballymahon where he spent the past year and a half or so of his long life been cared for by the staff of the nursing home. John was born reared and spent all of his adult life in the parish of Carrickedmond where he and his wife Mary reared a family of four on the family farm.
John had a great love of football and was a footballer of note. Many of his football friends from the 50's and 60's say he was one of the finest club footballers in the county of that era. John represented his club Carrickedmond and county Longford with distinguish, winning many honours with his club and was a member of he Leinster winning Longford junior team in 1953. He continued to follow and support his club Carrickedmond right up until his illness.
John took a great interest in all other parish affairs and loved to read in the local papers of achievements by Carrickedmond teams and individuals.
John was also a great family man and will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 50 years Mary, daughters Elizabeth and Rita, sister Nan other relatives and friends to whom we extend our sincere sympathy. John's remains were removed from the nursing home Ballymahon to his parish church in Carrickedmond and the burial took place to the local cemetery.
May he rest in peace.
