It was with deep regret that we report the death of Mr Bernard McHugh, Sonagh, Carrigallen which has occured at the General Hospital Cavan. "Bernie" as he was so popularly known to his hundreds of friends in the music and football world.
He had been in failing health for sometime. A native of Corriga, a member of a very popular and well known tailoring McHugh family who were held in high esteem by all. He emigrated to London while in his teens in the 1950's. After being there for some years, he met up with local Carrigallen girl Josephine Battles and after some years the couple married and were blessed by two boys. The couple were soon to return to his wife's native Carrigallen where they purchaed a house beside his wife's native home.
His return was Carrigallen's gain. He was a great football fan and played many challenge matches with the famous McCormack football team where he was employed in Killeshandra. He took a great interest in all the Carrigallen underage teams and became their trainer which he had great success in winning many games. He also took on and trained the local lady footballers. This team also had much success over counties Leitrim, Cavan and Longford, played at many sporting events at sports over those counties. The Carrigallen team had prominent girls of McCabe sisters Tully, Maura O'Reilly, Gretta O'Neill, Mulligan girls and many more. This was a team to be reckoned with. He was also a first class harmonica player and was featured on Radio Eireann's Ceili House many times.
He also won many honours at Flead Cheoil all over Ireland. He also played in a number of musical groups which were in great demand all over Leitrim and neighbouring counties. He played a major role in his adopted parish. May he rest in peace. Sympathy is extended to his wife (Josie) Josephine, Sonnagh; sons Christopher & Noel in England, Stephen, Carrigallen and daughter Karen, Dublin; sisters Mrs Brigid Currawin, Aughnacliffe and Mrs Mary Whitton, Colmcille, Co Longford.
He was predeceased by his brother John, Pat Michael, James and a large family circle. The removal of remains to funreal in St Mary's Church, Carrigallen was very large and representitive. The mass was concelebrated. Chief celebrant was Rev Ultan McGoohan CC Cootehill, Co Cavan (native of Carrigallen) and friend of the McHugh family and Very Rev Fr McKeown, Aughnacliffe. Burial took place in adjoining cemetery.
