Dromard club notes

April 01, 2019

Sympathy: Dromard GAA extends its sympathy to Deirdre and Joe O’Reilly, Crott and Dublin, on the recent death of Deirdre’s mother Philomena Traynor, Latton, Co. Monaghan. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h-anam.

Division 1: Rathcline 2-6 Dromard 0-13.  Well done to our senior footballers under the new management of Niall Sheridan, Stephen Reilly and Cathal Twaddle who made a winning start to their Division 1 league campaign with a narrow but deserved win over Rathcline in Clonbonny on Sunday. Dromard played some excellent football in the opening half and led by 7 points to 3 at the break. The Dromard points in the first half were scored by Diarmuid Masterson, Cian Mimnagh (2), Ronan McEntire, Francis McGee (2) and Bernard Sheridan. Rathcline came strongly into the game in the second half with a goal and a point in the first 5 minutes to level the scores. Dromard responded well to go three points clear thanks to scores from David Petit, Francis McGee and Bernard Sheridan. However, Rathcline drew level once again with a goal from a penalty. Cian Mimnagh put Dromard ahead with his fourth point of the game but Rathcline levelled to leave the sides deadlocked. With time almost up, Francis McGee converted a well-taken free to secure the two league points for Dromard. Congratulations to Conor McGahern and Karl McNerney who made their senior debuts for Dromard. The two debutants, along with another young player Ronan Bleakley, acquitted themselves extremely well in what was a highly competitive game. Dromard lined out as follows: Gavin McNerney; David Petit, Niall Vance, James Mimnagh; John Sheridan, Peter Reynolds, Conor McGahern; Ronan McEntire, Bryan McCormack; Diarmuid Masterson, Francis McGee, Bernard Sheridan; Karl McNerney, Ronan Bleakley, Cian Mimnagh. Subs: James Martin, Michael Reynolds.

Dromard Ladies Club Notes

County Matters: Two of our underage County panels were in action last Sunday and pleased to say both secured victories. The U/14s including Louise Tierney and Kate McEntire won their Leinster Semi-Final against Kilkenny, and not as I mistakenly wrote last week against Wicklow on a score of 4-2 to 8-14. This now puts them into a Leinster final on 13th April, and this time it is against Wicklow. Meanwhile the U/16s,not to be outdone were beating Kildare on a score of 3-12 to 5-11. The Senior Panel were hoping for an Offaly win against Kildare, but it wasn't to be, and now they need to beat Wicklow this weekend and hope Sligo beat Kildare in order to achieve a Div 3 semi-final spot. We wish all our County Panels the best of luck going forward.

Fixtures and Results: On Friday night last our Senior Panel travelled to Kenagh to play last year's Senior Champions Carrickedmond. Although we were well beaten there was a big improvement on previous matches. We played extremely well in periods of the match and we now need to put our spells of good passing and possession together for longer periods in a game. We would have learned lessons on the night as Carrickedmond showed how to be clinical in front of the posts, and also how to support the player on the ball. Never downhearted in defeat, we now look forward to the next round of Gold Cup on Sunday in Killashee at 11 30am against the amalgamated Ballymahon/forgney/killashee team.

This week sees the start of u/12 and u/16 Championships. The u/12s had a first round bye and can look forward to their first game on Mon April 8th away to Carrickedmond at 6 30pm. The U/16's start their campaighn tonight,Wednesday with a home tie against Grattans at 6 30pm. Support for all our teams is most welcome, but especially for the U/16's. Many of this panel not only juggle preparations for their Junior Cert with training under the watchful eye of Pauric, but have also found time to train and tog out with the Senior Panel. True dedication to your club Ladies, and we are so proud of what you do to ensure Dromard are able to put teams on the pitch.

Birthdays: One for a Senior Player, Aine Smith who will be 19 on Sat. Aine is studying to be a teacher at St.Pat's in Dublin, but manages to travel down to play with us. The second is for Chloe McDonald who is just starting out on her Dromard journey and will be 8 on Thurs. Happy Birthday girls from all your friends and teammates in Dromard.
