New York SFC final: Clarke leads Longford to historic win

September 10, 2018

Longford players celebrate after the New York SFC final.

Longford 0-12

Monaghan 0-11

Jamie Clarke scored 0-8 in a man of the match performance as Longford edged out Monaghan at Gaelic Park last night to be crowned New York senior football champions just six years after they reformed.

Longford, who have climbed the ranks by winning junior 'B', junior 'A' and intermediate championships in quick succession, led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time, but needed five second half points from Clarke to get them across the line, with the former Armagh captain slotting the winner from a free with three minutes to go.

The winners signalled their intent with points from ex-Longford sharpshooter Brian Kavanagh (two), Gary McGuire and Clarke to lead by 0-4 to 0-1 before 2016 champions Monaghan reduced the gap to two at the break.

With Mayo's Tom Cunniffe and David Freeman, who featured for the Farney County in this year's Allianz League, in their side, Monaghan improved in the second half and took a 0-11 to 0-9 lead before Clarke showed his star quality by slotting the last three points to hand Longford an historic win.
