Carey, Michael

July 08, 2006
The late Michael Carey The death occurred on June 21, 2006, of Michael Carey, Dublin and Duntryleague, Galbally. The deceased was a highly respectable and popular member of the farming community at Duntryleague to Lowetown National School which is now the community centre. His journey to school (approximately three miles) was made in fine and bad weather with very little protective clothing. When he finished his schooling he joined the Galbally Gaelic football team and proved he was one of the best players from minor to senior standard and won many trophies over his playing career. He was a gentleman both on or off the playing field. He was highly respected and popular not alone with his colleagues but also to his opponents. He left Galbally in the early fifties and travelled to Dublin where he got employment with builders. He continued to play with his home team and travelled back to Knocklong Railway station and walked home to Duntryleague. On Sunday evening after a game he travelled back to Knocklong Railway station and took the train to Dublin and never missed a days work. After a short time he purchased a new Raleigh bicycle with which enabled him to travel to Kingsbridge Railway station and cycled from the station to his home before returning the same way on Sunday evening. When his playing days were over he continued to come home to see his home team play on Sunday and returned to Dublin the same evening. His remains were removed from Frasers Funeral Home where the prayers were recited by Fr. Denis Talbot PP, Galbally/Aherlow to the Church Of Christ the King. Following Requiem Mass, internment took place in Galbally Cemetery. A number of former players and pals attended the funeral. The prayers at the graveside were recited by Canon Talbot and Father Quirke.
