Carmody, Jimmy

August 31, 2003
The late Jimmy Carmody Jimmy Carmody (ex Garda Siochana), Chapel Street, Tarbert died on Sunday, August 17, 2003 at the home of his brother Michael and sister-in-law Nuala Carmody, after an illness borne with dignity and courage. During his illness he was blessed to have the tender care of Michael and Nuala and their family in their home where Jimmy was born 69 years ago. He was an esteemed member of a popular and widely known connected local family and was well known throughout North Kerry. He was a member of the Garda Siochana for a good number of years, serving in County Galway for 13 years. Jimmy, who lived on the Market Road took care of his own mother Ellen (nee Stack) for a number of years before her death. He was a most popular member of our community and will be sadly missed from around the town, especially by his neighbours in Chapel Street with whom he loved to visit and have a chat. He was a staunch GAA man and had a great knowledge of the game. He was an outstanding footballer in his day and wore the green and gold with the Kerry minors in 1952 and was a member of the Tarbert minor team who won the North Kerry Championship the same year. In February, 2003, at the Tarbert GAA social, that minor team was honoured and Jimmy was in the best of health. He was so proud of the plaque he received on the night and said it was a wonderful idea by the Tarbert GAA club to honour the team and also to have the opportunity to meet so many of the players he played football with 50 years ago. Little did anyone think that six months later, Jimmy would be gone to his eternal reward. He also enjoyed a flutter on the horses and was well known by many owners and trainers at Irish race meetings. There was a huge attendance at the removal of his remains from St Mary's Funeral Home, Tarbert to St Marys Church. The remains draped with the green and gold and red and black jerseys, were shouldered by family members to the Church. GAA supporters past and present formed a guard of honour all along the route to the Church. The funeral Mass was concelebrated by Very Rev. Mossy Brick, PP, Tarbert. Other concelebrants were Fr John O'Connor, Fr John Shine, Fr Martin Buckley, Fr Stephen Kennelly and Fr Philip O'Connell a former neighbour and school class mate of Jimmy. The funeral was to Lislaughtin Abbey and the remains were shouldered from the Church to the entrance to Shannon Park by friends and GAA members who also provided a guard of honour. Fr John Shine and Fr Philip O'Connell said the prayers at his graveside and after the burial an oration was given by Kieran Walsh on behalf of the Tarbert GAA Club. Jimmy was predeceased by sisters Nellie and Delia and is survived by his brothers Pat Joe (Borrisokane, Co Tipperary), Joe (Limerick), Michael (Tarbert), Andy (New York), sisters Mrs Evelyn Keating (Limerick) and Mrs Sheila O'Connor (Tarbert), sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, numerous relatives and friends to whom sympathy of the community is extended. Family members, relatives and friends of Jimmy travelled from many parts for the funeral. Courtesy of Limerick Leader August 2003
