Blake, John

The late John Blake There was shock and sadness throughout the Killaloe/Ballina district, following the sudden death of John Blake, Cross Road, Killaloe. Son of the late Jonie and Mai (nee Gissane), John was a popular member of the community and belonged to the musical Blake-Gissane family synonymous with New Year's Eve Parades throughout the town in the 60's, 70s and 80s. His great philosophy in life was never put off till tomorrow, what you can do to-day, and little did he think as he prepared for a day on the lake with his cousins Bobby and Sean, that there would not be a tomorrow for him. A keen sportsperson and follower of county and club, John was a member of the first Smith O'Brien team since 1887 to win a Senior Hurling Championship, in 1962. Huge crowds of sympathisers paid their respects to John at Lynch's Funeral Home and St. Flannan's Church, Killaloe. Requiem Mass was con-celebrated by Fr Pat Malone and Fr Noel Hayes. Following the Mass, his remains were removed to Newlands Cross Crematorium. He is survived by his daughters, Caroline, Jackie and Kelly; his sisters Nonie, Stella and Alice; brothers, Danny and Jim, relatives, extended family and friends.
