Ryan, Dan Joe

The Late Dan Joe Ryan There was a great sense of shock across the North Cork and South Tipperary areas on Sunday June 8 when news filtered through of the death of Dan Joe Ryan, a native of Glanworth, at his home in Powerstown, Clonmel. Dan Joe in his early 50s was in great health and died suddenly on Sunday morning as he prepared to go to Mass. In his playing days he was a noted Gaelic footballer with Mitchelstown CBS, his club Glanworth and Avondhu. A forward with great dash he was a key player on the great Glanworth minor football sides that took 4 North Cork Minor (A) F.C. titles in a row in the late 60's. They also won two Co. Minor titles in that period. In 1971 Dan Joe captained the great Glanworth side to Co. Junior success and played Intermediate with the side that won the Co. title in 1976. He played Senior Football with Glanworth up to around 1980. He moved to Dublin but always kept in touch with his local area and was a regular visitor to see his mother right up to his sudden death. In 1994 he moved from Dublin to Clonmel where he took up residence with his wife and family at Silversprings on the outskirts of the town. A great community man Dan Joe became involved with the great Moyle Rovers football side and this year was manager of their Intermediate team. He had been with the team on Saturday evening last when they played and had a win in the Co. Intermediate Football Championship. His warm, friendly and jolly character endeared him to all he came in contact with. There was a huge attendance at the removal from his home to Powerstown Church and also at the Requiem Mass and burial. He is survived by his wife Sheena, daughters Aishling and Aoife, mother Neillie, sisters Margaret and Helen relatives and many neighbours and friends. Courtesy of the Limerick Leader June 2003
