O'Sullivan, Jackie

June 30, 2003
The Late Jackie O'Sullivan The death has occurred at St. Ita's Hospital, Newcastle West of Jackie O' Sullivan of Knockanaire. Jackie was synonymous with Tour. Everywhere anyone went in GAA circles, the first question always was "How's Jackie?" For 22 years, Jackie served as Chairman of the Tournafulla GAA Club. He was there in 1965 when the club won the West Junior A Championship; in 1972 and 1973, the West Senior Championship. In 1967 and '68, he was a county minor hurling selector; in 1966 Jackie was a selector with St. Ita's i.e., Tour, Killeedy and Monagea. From 1979 to 1986 he served as Vice-chairman of the West Board. As chairman of the club he was instrumental in the purchase and development of Pairc Mhic Charthaigh. It is little wonder then that the green and white flag was flying at half mast for the past few years. Jackie was a great parish man. He gave of his time to the GAA, the Development Association and the carnivals in a voluntary basis. Fr. O'Gorman said in him homily at Jackie's Mass, that there were "no complications with Jackie, what you saw was what you got". Everyone knew his political views. At the time of his death, he was Life President of the local Fianna Fail Cumann, having previously served as secretary for many years. His quick wit and turn of phrase enlivened many a meeting. Jackie was a good family man and a shrewd farmer. He lived life to the full and liked nothing better than a good game of 45, he was very punctual and found is difficult to understand people who couldn't finish on time in the evenings.
