Carrig, Tommy

June 30, 2003
The Late Tommy Carrig Less than two months ago, when Desmonds won the under 21 County Football title, Tommy Carrig, who had been very ill that morning, gathered his strength to be in Mungret when the cup was lifted in triumph. A week later, though noticeable weaker, he attended the local schools final. He was faithful to the last, to the game and the club he loved, and one which he served with such distinction for half a century. Tommy first pulled on an Askeaton jersey in 1954, won West under 16 titles and County minor titles in 1959. In 1960 he won a County senior football title with Western Gaels, the first of five senior titles he won with three different clubs. Western Gaels 1960, Ballysteen 1964 and Askeaton in 1965, 1966 and 1972. To date, he is the only West Limerick at minor and senior football titles. He wore the green and white of Limerick at minor and senior level, was on the team that beat Cork in Killarney in 1965 and which so nearly shocked Kerry in the final of that year. Nineteen years after winning his first, Tommy lined out a full forward in the 1979 County senior final when Askeaton lost to Oola. He also won a County junior football title with Ballysteen in 1961. Playing days over, he was ever present to help his club, whether working on the field, preparing for big match days, helping in fund-raising, always ready to lend valuable advice. About 10 years ago, he started a ladies football club in Askeaton and had some successful years. To the girls he weas a real father figure whom they really loved and there were many moist eyes when they in their club jerseys formed a guard of honour at his removal. Sympathy is extended to his family. Courtesy of the Limerick Leader June 2003
