Herbert, Phil

The Late Phil Herbert It was with sad and deep regret that Claughaun learned of the recent death of Corbally based resident Phil Herbert. Phil was a native of Ardpatrick and became involved with the club in the mid-sixties. A loyal and dedicated committee man he did trojan work for over a long period. His best contribution was with the youth section where he worked closely with the late Paddy O'Connor, who also resided in the Corbally area. Both of them galvanised the underage section into action and their prodigious efforts rejuvenated Claughan and were responsible for many successes that the club enjoyed in the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's. Phil, Paddy and their co-workers coached and nurtured such players as Leo O'Connor, Brian O'Mara, Pat, Liam and Michael Galligan, Gus Ryan, Andy Cunneen, John Fitzgerald, Mike Ryan, Alan Browne, David Holmes, Danny Fitzgerald, Finbarr Hogan, Michael Molyneaux, Matt Graham and others. Phil also helped out with the club's camogie team who enjoyed participation and some success over a few years with Mary Murphy at the helm. He was also a true and loyal Limerick supporter who was never afraid to suggest change for the improvement of hurling and was well known in the stewarding capacity at Limerick Gaelic Gaelic Grounds. A very devoted family man and a thorough gentleman, the club extends sincere sympathy to his wife Bridget, James, Brid, Martin, his extended family and many friends, on their sad and loss.
