The Late Gerry Goodwin
Gerry Goodwin, from Farranshone, who died on August 31, 2003 in St Johns Hospital, Limerick was well known local musician, golfer and GAA supporter. He was a relaxed individual with a 'weird and wicked sense of humour" and his dedication to his family was noted by everyone who knew him.
His wife Noreen is from Newport, Co. Tipperary and Gerry himself formed a ballad group, An Craobh Rua and was also a founding member of Thadys Remedy.
His ability to fit in at any time with any band made him stand out as one of the great local musicians. He composed a number of fine songs in his life time but chief among them was a song called Limerick Town. It showed the love he had for his native city.
Gerry grew up with a love of sport and developed a huge passion for his club Treaty Sarsfields, winning a county juvenile football medal in 1968.
His great loves were GAA and golf. He served Treaty Sarsfields as secretary and was also a dedicated fan of Limerick football and hurling teams. He was a member of the Castletroy Golf Club and was a founder member of the Davin Golf Society where he also served a term as captain.
He is survived by his son Ronan 20, parents Tom and Tresha, brothers Tommy and Kieran, sisters Pauline, Jane and Orla and his many relations.
Gerry's time in American instilled in him a love of Ireland and all things Irish so it was only right and fitting that after he laid to rest in Killymurry that his family and friends gathered to give him an Irish wake to remember in the Davin Arms.
"Irish music was his world, he shared it with us all. That night we shared it with him," said his brother Tommy.
