The Late Des McDonnell
Monaleen GAA mourned the passing of Des McDonnell at the weekend.
His death occurred after a long illness. In Monaleen and Castleroy, he enjoyed the genuine affection of the people of these areas. He was a life long lover of the GAA and in particular a lover of his time to Monaleen. He was one of the first to introduce gaelic football to the club and his many young players of his era went to a higher stage, including Noel and Eugene Leonard, Brian Spillane, Joe Redington and Ger Stokes.
He was recognised by the higher powers in Limerick at the time and it was no surprise when he was appointed manager of the county senior squad in 1979. A native of Louth, he guided Monaleen to under age titles and in 1978 he was in charge of the senior team which won county honours for the first time.
A minutes silence was observed at the Monaleen v Ballylanders match. A guard of honour was provided by his club at his funeral.
