The Late Gerard Fitzgerald The death occurred on April 26 of Gerard Fitzgerald, Galbally after a serious illness borne with dignity and fortitude. In his late forties, he was a highly respected member of the local community to which he contributed much over his relatively short life span. He received his early education in the local primary school, and in his secondary education, showed that he was a brilliant student. He decided early in life that he would join the business world. He acquired a post in Easons in Dublin where he made a major impact with the management and staff in a very short time. His friendly manner to all customers, including those from home, was always to the fore in the different positions he held in and around the metropolis. After some years in Dublin he returned home to help in his parents shop, which had a grocery and hardware section. His social life evolved from the local GAA football club as a player, and in the other sporting clubs in the parish. In 1976 he took an active part in the production of the parish magazine as a member of the editorial section using his knowledge of the locality and the history of the War of Independence his late grandfather Edmond O'Brien, participated in the rescue of Sean Hogan at Knocklong railway station in May 1919. Gerard was a well known competitor in quiz competitions and he brought many successes to his colleagues. His demise at such an early age was a shock to anyone who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He was a devoted and loving husband and father who will be sadly missed. The attendance at his residence where he reposed prior to his removal to the church, the concelebrated requiem Mass and interment in the local cemetery, was massive, a tribute to his popularity and that of his wife Rose and family. The remains of the deceased were removed from his home to the Church of Christ the King, for Requiem Mass concelebrated by Canon Denis Talbot; Fr Muiris O'Connor, Kilfinane; Michael Hanly, St Patrick's, Limerick; Fr Phonsie Condon, Limerick IT, and Fr Joe Tynan. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Rosemarie (Rose); sons Sean, Kevin, Darragh; daughter Deirdre; uncle Willie Pa (Bill O'Brien); aunts, mother-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, cousins other relatives and friends.
