University of Limerick manager Brian Lohan praised the Independent.ie Fitzgibbon Cup after his team quietened noisy neighbours Mary Immaculate College in yesterday's Treaty County derby.

"I suppose it's probably the most competitive hurling competition there is," Lohan stated after the game at Mary I.

"There's nine or ten teams that can win it at the start of the year, and you can see the quality of players out there'.

UL came out on top by 5-15 to 3-14 and are on course to defend their title.

"One (Fitzgibbon) is special but there's not too many around with two", said UL captain Jack Browne after the game.
