Byrne, Vincent

January 01, 2001
Although ill for some years, Vincent Byrne of Rutagh, Ballysheedy's passing was not expected. During his 67 years on this earth, he was highly respected among his many friends involved in the sporting and social life of the parish of Donaghmore. His wife Bernie, sons Mike and Liam, daughters Mary, Margaret, Noreen and sister Anne, were equal partners with Vincent in promoting the better values of the area. In sport, the GAA headed his interest and the social side of the organisation through Scor had prominent people in this family. The Pioneers and the care of the elderly was a priority by the Byrne household and Vincent was a willing worker in all undertakings taken to develop these. His close proximity and work in Limerick City led him to the GAA and with his late Brother John, he played with Young Ireland. About this time, families neighbouring him, the Grimes, Ryan's, McManus's and Hayes's were at at the forefront in the fortunes of South Liberties and his love of Gaelic Games led him to support and follow the colours of his native parish. With South Liberties he went on to give some great service as an administrator and leader. He never shirked a challenge and he had plenty of them in the positions he held in the club. Treasurer, assistant secretary and PRO fell under his mantle at various times. In all these, he proved to be a wonderful and dedicated worker. When the club requested a singer for the Scor, he was there and indeed many will remember his talents in this field. Hurling took him ahead of his club and for a time was a member of the Limerick senior selection committee. Life opened many avenues to him, but his greatest love was his home and family. Even in latter years when illness took over him, he was happy with his loved ones. He remained a staunch family man and its by this he will be best remembered. The South Liberties colours draped his coffin as current officers and members paid their own tribute at his funeral. - courtesy of the Limerick Leader March 2002
