O'Connell, Stephen

January 01, 2001
At the age of 58 the death of Stephen O'Connell, Clonmel and formerly of Ballinagrade, Ballyneety, has taken place. In 1950 he won juvenile county hurling medal with South Liberties and two years later he was on the minor team which annexed honours. It was after the 1960 win that he joined the Army and married Peggy Walsh and settled down in Clonmel. Stephen came from a family steeped in hurling lore and his brothers and four sisters. John, Mick, Christy, Tom, Paddy, Tony, Myra, Han, Margaret and Kathleen, were born and reared in Ballinagrade. They were all educated at Carnane National School. His parish was Knockea. Three years ago the South Liberties Club honoured the 1960 minor team at a function in the county and country golf club. Stephen and Tony Moynihan were among the players honoured, both have passed on to their Maker since. Stephen had many friends in the Ballyneety area. Courtesy of the Limerick Leader November 2002
