Ryan, Michael D
September 17, 2011
His many friends around this locality were deeply saddened on hearing of the death of Michael D Ryan, Askeaton. Michael was a man of many parts and was closely associated with many local organisations in his locality, including the GAA, the Credit Union and others.
We also remember him, many years ago, attending an anti-abortion meeting and voicing his supporter for the movement. When some people questioned him if he was also pro-life regarding the question of capital punishment at the time, he clearly indicated that he was opposed to the death penalty. Michael D was a brilliant poet and songwriter and some years ago published a book of his countless compositions in verse, which varied from the sublime and humerous to the serious and practical, with many fine pieces about his own locality and home environment for whom he displayed a great love and empathy within his writings.
He was, as well as being very much involved in public organisations of different kinds also a dedicated family man. It was only a short time ago that we read a beautiful poem by Michael in a copy of the Askeaton Journal which was dedicated to his late wife Nellie who pre-deceased him only a short time ago. Michael's coffin was brought to Askeaton Parish Church on Wednesday where there was a a huge congregation gathered to attend the Requiem Mass and pay their tributes to Michael's memory. Among thet celebrants was our own former Curate Fr Michael Cussen who is now PP in Fedamore and who previously spent many years in Askeaton.
There was also a big attendance at the funeral which followed the Requiem Mass. Among the attendance were representatives of The Ballyguiltenance Rural Journal for which Michael had been contributing for many years. Sympathy is extended to his family, extended family and other relatives. 'Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.'
