Duggan, Dan

The term "Great Limerick Supporter" is something that is often bestowed lightly on people but in the case of the late Dan Duggan the honour is so well deserved.
Dan passed away last week after a short illness and will be so sadly missed by his family and all those who had the good fortune to know him.
In recent years I got to know Dan well and from the very start I was so impressed with his knowledge of Limerick hurling and football and indeed all sports.
The Duggans are such a well known Limerick family and have been great supporters of Limerick GAA - indeed for the last few years they have sponsored Patrickswell.
From the National League to Championship Dan Duggan would be at all games and had a very clear and frank view on players, managers and the County Board.
I can remember speaking to Dan on many occasions about his days at the CBS and he often relayed stories about the great players and teams they had during his time. I can remember once Dan telling men about an U-16 County Final and how the match was later taken from them.
That left a sour taste for Dan especially when he had scored three goals from corner forward.
At his funeral we saw sports people from all walks of life in Limerick and beyond.
Eamon Grimes captain of the Limerick team in 1973, Joe McKenna, Liam O'Donoghue, Willie Moore and so many more of the team.
Also in attendance was former Tipperary hurler Noel O'Dwyer and former Offaly captain Pat Fluery. From top horse trainers to golfers they all came to pay their respects to Dan Duggan's family and it was clear how so many people held him in such high regard. It is sad that he will not be in the Gaelic Grounds this Saturday evening when our senior fooballers play Kerry. From afar Dan, I am sure, will be having a major discussion about the game and he will leave them in no doubt that this time Limerick can overcome Kerry.
Dan Duggan was a generous man and it mattered little whether it was king or servant, they were all treated the same. In losing Dan we have lost one of the great Limerick gaels and to his family and friends I offer my sincere sympathy.
