The Late Margaret Beary

The parish of Pallasgreen and Templebraden bid farewell to one of it best known and well liked citizens when Margaret (Peggy) Beary nee Horan was laid to her eternal rest. Born and raised in Knockane, serving people was the way of life for Peggy as her mother Bridget was the proprietor of Kielys bar (now known as the Idler Bar). Peggy Horan was helping out whenever she could and it wasn't long before she mastered the trade. The Horans were enterprising and hardworking people as her late father Paddy Horan was well known for making trap cars.
After marrying her beloved husband, Larry Beary, in 1969 in St. Bridgid's Church Templebraden they continued to run the pub in Knockane. In 1977 they took over Dennehy's pun in Kilduff where they made their home and spent their life happily together rearing two girls, Nora and Margaret, and one boy Billy.
The pub provided a great service to the people of Pallasgreen over many decades and became well known for its friendly and homely atmosphere with its big open fireside and sugán chairs.
The real beauty of frequenting the pub was that you were made instantly welcome. They had a great relationship with their customers and it was a friendly and welcoming environment. Peggy and Larry enjoyed being publicans and enjoyed a good conversion with the punters.
A person of a genial nature, Peggy treated everyone the same. A lifetime in the pub business came to an end in June of 2005 when they decided to call time and retire to relax and enjoy life.
Peggy was a great believer in community spirit and was a very kind lady, who gladly gave of her time to help friends and neighbours and always put other people's needs before her own.
A very united couple throughout the 41 years of their married life, Peggy and Larry made a great team, and they were known the length and breadth of Pallasgreen, Templebraden and beyond.
A keen GAA supporter she always found time to follow the local teams, Knockane and Pallasgreen and especially Larry, a gifted footballer who was well known throughout East Limerick. Larry had a unique distinction of winning a South and East Junior football title in the same year 1951. He was presented with his South medal after 59 years recently in the Idler Bar by the Knockane GAA Club.
While Peggy couldn't attend due to her hospitalisation she insisted that the medal be brought into her at the hospital, and so proud she was she showed it around to everyone in the ward.
Peggy was a woman of strong Christian faith, attending Mass daily and while still gravely ill she attended the Easter devotions, Throughout her life the late Peggy touched many lives and will forever remain in the hearts, minds and memories of those who knew her.
The funeral, one of the largest seen in the parish for many years, bore testament to her popularity. The esteem in which Peggy was held was evidenced by the large numbers of people who gathered at St John the Baptist Church, Nicker.
Mass was celebrated by Rev Fr Halloway assisted by Rev Fr Burns, Canon McNamara and Rev Fr McSweeney.
After concelebrated mass, her remains were brought to her final resting place in Ballinaclough cemetery, a short distance from her home in Tullabeg and her former home and pub in Kilduff. Afterwards it was very poignant that the family gathered in her former pun (now Ryan's) where she served the people for 28 years to reminisce and pay their respects to a great lady who quietly touched the hearts of many through her modesty and kindness.
Sympathies are extended to her husband Larry, daughters Nora (Corbett) and Margaret, son Billy, son in law Sean, sisters in law, brothers in law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.

Margaret (Peggy) Beary; born June 25 1929, died April 11, 2010.
