McMahon, Garry

July 19, 2008
The death occurred in March 2008 in Newcastlewest, Co Limerick of Garry McMahon, Solicitor, Footballer, song writer, composer and poet. The late Garry McMahon was born in Hill House Nursing Home, Cashel in August 1937, the eldest son of Kitty McMahon nee Ryan of Ladyswell Street, Cashel and Bryan McMahon of Listowel, Co. Kerry. His mother had married the year before and moved to Listowel, but in carrying on the tradition had returned to her native town for the birth of her first child. Garry again returned to Cashel in the late 1950s after completing his law degree in UCD, and completed his apprenticeship as a Solicitor with his late uncle Donal T. Ryan, who had officers in both Cahir and Cashel. At this stage, Garry was a talented footballer, having played for the Kerry Minors in 1955. He continued to play for Kerry, winning two All Ireland medals in 1959 and 1962. He was a talented goal scorer and still holds the record for the fastest goal in an All Ireland final, 31 seconds into the 1962 final against Roscommon. He also played minor hurling with Kerry. After qualifying as a Solicitor, he moved to Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick and opened his own practice, Patrick G McMahon Solicitors. He was joined in business by his brother Owen, also a Solicitor and continued to practice law until his death. The Cashel connection between the McMahon family and Cashel continues to this day, with Garry's niece Maire McMahon working in Donal T Ryan Solicitors, whose managing partner Donal Ryan was Garry's godson. Garry was also a talented musician and toured the USA with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann. In latter years, he penned many a fine song and ballad and recorded a CD "The Songman" of his own songs in the recent months before his death. He is survived by his wife, Joan, children Gearoid, Treasa and Rossa and also his brothers, Jim, Bryan, Maurice and Owen. Tipperary Star, 19th July 2008
