Kennedy, Noel

The late Noel Kennedy The recent death of Noel Kennedy of Ballynanty More, North Liberties has caused great sadness throughout the local community. Throughout his life, he mixed living in the Thomondgate area with working and socialising in the Meelick area and was always regarded in Meelick as one of our own. In his youth, he worked a lot with greyhounds and, as one man in the industry said, "Noel put many a good dog through his hands.' He became known to everyone in the locality as he exercised his dogs for many years on the roads of Mellick. His pleasant, engaging personality and friendly disposition endeared him to everybody and Noel never had a bad word to say about anybody. A talented sportsman in his youth, Noel hurled with Treaty Sarsfields and when that club disbanded, he came to Meelick in the late 1960s. He became a regular on that team for many years and it was his proud boast that he scored two goals when marked by a prominent senior Clare defender. Noel was always available when transport was scarce to ferry juveniles to matches, especially in the early 1970s when Meelick were at their prime. He also donated a trophy to the County Board for juvenile competitions. Noel worked most of life in the machinery business, driving JCBs and heavy machinery. He was extremely popular and well liked and doted on his daughter Jackie and son David. It was a joy to watch as they often socialised together and looked out for each other. Noel's remains were removed from McMahon's funeral home to St Munchin's church and he was buried in Ballycannon Cemetery in Meelick. It was fitting that his coffin was draped in the colours of Treaty sarsfields, with Meelick GAA formed a guard of honour and that he was buried in Meelick as his many friends from Thomondgate, Meelick and elsewhere gathered together to say a sad farewell to one of nature's gentlemen. Noel is survived by his daughter Jackie, son David, brothers Michael, Patsy and Martin and sister Nancy. Noel Kennedy; born December 25 1942; died March 4 2009 Limerick Leader 21st March 2009
