St Kieran's club notes

November 19, 2019

AGM:

We will hold our Annual General Meeting on Thursday November 28 in Ardagh Hall at 8.30. We would encourage all of our members, both playing and non-playing as well as anyone wishing to provide a helping hand and get involved in some capacity in 2020 to come along on the night.

Charity Road Hurling 2019:

This year’s Charity Road Hurling competition will take place on Friday December 27. Since its inception the event has gone from strength to strength and has proven to be one of the most eagerly anticipated days in our GAA calendar attracting competitors young and old from within and outside our parish. Once again, the competition takes place around our traditional route in Ardagh, beginning at the bottom cross, working down the main road to Skehanagh Bridge which has ruined many a team’s aspirations over the years before coming up by Cahermoyle House before the finishing stretch back into Ardagh.

Hurling for Fun:

Session 4 takes place this Friday evening at 8.30 in Ardagh Astroturf. There has been an extremely positive uptake in the event during the first three weeks and we hope to see many more in the coming weeks. The event is open to everyone regardless of your hurling ability. In order to cover the cost of the lights we would ask all participants to contribute €3.

County Premier U21 Football Championship Round 3:

St. Kieran’s 1.12 Adare 2.10

Mick Neville Pak, Rathkeale provided the perfect venue on a cold but calm Saturday afternoon last for our round 3 encounter with Adare. It was the men from the banks of the Maigue who made the brighter start controlling possession in the opening ten minutes building up a two-point lead. In that opening spell we found it extremely difficult to deal with Adare’s physicality and coughed up possession on the rare occasions we managed to win possession disappointingly. We settled into the half once Noel Callanan opened our account and confidence began to grow. The opening half was an end to end battle with both sets of attack’s causing numerous problems for the defences. Adare capitalized on a moment’s indecision on our part when the found the back of the net midway through the half. Within minutes they had their second goal, albeit dubiously following consultation between the referee and his officials to put Adare into a commanding six-point lead. To the lads credit they rebounded straight away, Stephen Lyons brought the game back to five points before Noel Callanan got his second point and then cut through the heart of the Adare defence to coolly slot past the Adare netminder to put only a solitary point between the sides. Going in at the break we led by a single point which was a fantastic turnaround considering our earlier setbacks. As expected Adare began the second half brightly, unfortunately for their part despite their dominance in the possession stakes they were wayward in front of goal and we capitalized from our minimal possession to take the second halves opening score to increase our lead to two. Pressure was now building from the pacey Adare side who transitioned the ball excellently from defence to attack. Their attacks from the back were now causing a number of problems as the high intensity of the game took its toll. Adare could well have added a third goal were it not for the last gasp efforts of full back, Eoin McEnery clearing the ball off the line for the second week in succession. The momentum of the game began to swing midway through the half as we lost our shape when Adare dropped a man back in front of their full back line and we began to struggle under the breaks of kick outs. Soon Adare took the lead once again and we now had to chase the game. As the final whistle approached John Hayes’s excellent 45 yard free tied up the game and it looked as if momentum was now in our favour. Alas Adare advanced forward and won a free in the dying moments of the game. To the Adare free takers credit he showed no signs of feeling the pressure as he calmly stroked a wonderful free over the bar from the left hand touchline to give Adare the win late on in what was a wonderful game of football where there was little or nothing between the two sides. From our perspective to lose a game in such dramatic fashion late on was heart-breaking for all concerned. In our three games to date there has been no more than a kick of the ball between the sides, unfortunately from our perspective we have lacked a bit of luck and also composure to close out games. With two losses and a draw from our three games it looks highly unlikely that we will progress to the quarter finals. We play Na Piarsaigh this Saturday in Adare at 2pm where we have to win and then hope that results go our way in order to progress.
