West Junior ‘A’ Hurling Championship Round 1

St. Kieran’s 0.18 Adare 2.6

Our junior hurlers played their first round of the west championship last Friday evening in ideal conditions against Adare in knockaderry. It has been a challenging few years for our hurlers but last Friday night was an extremely positive start to this year’s championship against a strong Adare line up.

Both teams were slow to settle before Donie nolan opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a lovely point from play. In a tough and tight opening quarter, scores were hard to come by. By half time, Johnny mccarthy with 2, Anthony mullins, Donie nolan from play and frees and a superb long range point from John buckley had our lads ahead 9 pts to 5 at half time.

Again on the restart the game was tough and tight and it was very pleasing to see all our scores in the second half, bar one, was from play with all 6 forwards scoring from play when Danny Collum, Johnny mccarthy , Anthony mullins, Cillian ambrose, Donie nolan, Anthony molyneaux and another fine score from John buckley  had us 17 to 6 ahead entering the last 3 minutes. 2 late goals for Adare followed and the games finished with Johnny hitting his 4th point from play of the night.

All in all it was a very impressive start to the championship and the team can take great encouragement from this performance. Next up are Askeaton in 2 weeks time. Another very pleasing aspect to the games was the strong subs bench we had.

Intercounty Activity

Congratulations to the Limerick senior hurlers on their fantastic victories over Waterford and Clare over the past two weeks which has got them back into contention for a place in the All Ireland series and the Munster final. Limerick travel to Thurles this Sunday at 2pm for their final group game against Tipperary where a win will see them advance. Given Limerick’s recent performances there is phenomenal interest in Sunday’s game and we would encourage those of you interested in going to purchase tickets ASAP online at www.gaa.ie or from your local Centra / SuperValue stores.

Limerick senior footballers have been drawn against Westmeath in round 2 of the Qualifiers which will take place on the weekend of June 14-16. Following their disappointing loss to Cork they will undoubtedly be looking to rekindle the form which saw them outperform Tippeary in the Munster Quarter final.

John Hayes, Noel Callanan and Kevin Guina were part of the Limerick u20 football squad who got their 2019 campaign underway last week when they travelled to O’ Connor Park, Tullamore to face off against Offally in the opening round of the All Ireland U20 League. Unfortunately on the night they came up against a far superior Offally side who came away with a very comfortable win.
