St. Kieran’s GAA Club

County U21 ‘A’ Football Championship Semi Final:

St. Kieran’s 1.7 Galbally 2.7

Kilmallock was the venue on Sunday afternoon for the eagerly anticipated U21 County semifinal which pitted us with newly crowned south kingpins Galbally. Having just won the south championship on Friday evening against Ballylanders it was evident early on that there was fatigue in the Galbally side as we raced into a 1.2 to 0.0 lead inside the opening fifteen minutes of the game. Having played some excellent passages of football in this period, in particular our defensive play in the middle third snuffing out the physically superior Galbally side we failed to make the most of our advantage in the possession stakes and were wayward in front of goals which would ultimately prove costly. We were dealt a major blow before half time when we turned over possession working the ball from the back and Galbally showed the predator instinct which has seen them capture the County Intermediate championship also in 2018 and rifled the ball into the back of our net. The sides were tied at the interval which was disappointing from our perspective as we dominated possession and should have gone in at the break. Alas the players regrouped straight away and soon raced into a three-point lead thanks to scores from Liam Upton, John Hayes and Dylan Moloney. We now began to grow in confidence but once again when we had Galbally on the ropes we failed to land the knockout blow and let them back into the game. Galbally began to adopt a full-court press in the second period when we tried to work the ball from the back and following some excellent defensive work on their part, they turned us over and punished us finding the back of the net and bring the game back to a draw once again following our excellent start to the half. Having been three points up we soon found ourselves five points down as Galbally took control of the game. To the players credit they worked hard to get back into the game and got the score down to three points once again with scores from John Hayes and Dylan Moloney. As the game drew to a conclusion we pressed hard in pursuit of an elusive equalising goal. The game could well have gone into extra time but Liam Upton’s fine effort after making his way in along the right-hand side of the goals had the Galbally goalkeeper beaten but just narrowly went the wrong side of the goalpost. At the final whistle there was a sense of what could have been. We put together some good passages of play but weren’t clinical in the vital moments where as Galbally took their chances and got scores at vital parts of the game. And with Sunday’s defeat ends the 2018 playing season for the club. While Sunday’s defeat was a major disappointment for all concerned huge progress has been made in 2018 securing the West U21 ‘A’ title while many of these players also tasted senior county championship and league games and were part of the west senior championship winning team. With only five members of the starting team overage for 2019 there is plenty to look forward to with this group of players. Many thanks to the players and management team of Mike Windle, Paudie McCarthy, Owen Hayes and John O’ Connor for their efforts throughout the campaign. We would also like to wish Killian Enright a speedy recovery following his injury sustained in the West final victory over St. Senan’s.
