Galbally club notes

December 10, 2018

Galbally GAA would like to extend our congratulations to John Kiely on becoming Munster GAA manager of the year, and he has some more engagements in the coming days and we wish him well in those. He also launched the superb book on Limerick’s All Ireland victory during the week ‘At Last’ by Ciaran Crowe and Joe Lyons. The book is available in the local shops in Galbally and features an in-depth interview with John himself and with all the players who ended the 45-year famine.

The Under 21 footballers were due to play the County Final last weekend in Kilmallock against Kildimo-Pallaskenry, but it did not go ahead as Kildimo-Pallaskenry informed the County Board that they would not be fulfilling the fixture. The Bord Na nOg medal presentation for football and hurling will take place in Knocklong on Thursday 13th December.

Galbally GAA have reserved two tables of 10 at the Garryspillane GAA Social at the Woodlands in Adare on Sunday December 30th at 6pm. Please contact Tom Quinlan or Ger Cussen if you want tickets.

After a long and tedious battle, Galbally GAA Last Man Standing is over. On the weekend of Saturday 6th/Sunday 7th October it commenced with 115 participants and now two months later on the 7th December, the two remaining participants, Peter Davern and Mike Doyle have agreed among themselves to halve the pot of €360 rather than go head to head for an outright winner. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

We would like to thank our 115 participants, and if a turning point could be identified, there is no doubt that Sunday 11th November was the Red Letter day. It was a day when a whopping 48 participants were eliminated, primarily due to Arsenal failing to beat Wolves along with a couple of other drawn games. We would like to congratulate Peter Davern and Mike Doyle again and we hope everyone else enjoyed the battle.

We now move on to our new fundraising venture, called Split the Pot, a simple but effective dual function fundraising and prize giving scheme. It has been pioneered locally by Kilfeacle RFC to whom we are very grateful, and particularly grateful to Michelle Noonan and Tony Lowry of Lowry’s Bar who were most obliging and helpful when we were researching the concept.

Envelopes and buckets are available in the local shops and pubs. Each entry is €2 and on a Saturday night, all the envelopes are collected and counted. The total pot is divided 50:50 between Galbally GAA club, and the winning entrant, the envelopes are put in a hat, and the winning entrant is drawn. The key benefit is that there will be a prize winner each week, 52 weeks of the year. The first draw takes place on Saturday night next 15th December at 10pm and draws will take place in rotation in the local pubs.

The fund can increase or decrease on a weekly basis depending on the number of entrants, but there will always be an overjoyed weekly winner. Simply put two euro in the envelope, seal the envelope, write your name and mobile on the front and pop into the bucket. We look forward to providing that feeling of a surge of electricity to many locals in the coming weeks and months as they win some cash. #SealAndPop

A number of local fundraisers are taking place at the moment for Galbally Under 12 and 14 Footballer Scott Kelly whose name has appeared in these notes throughout the year. Galbally GAA wish the fundraising team well and we ask everyone to support this cause.
