All Ireland Champions:

This Saturday evening St. Kieran’s GAA club are privileged to host both the Liam McCarthy and the West County Hotel Cups along with players from the Limerick senior hurling and Ladies Football panels from their respective All Ireland Championship success over the last number of months. Both cups will be present in Coolcappagh GAA grounds/Community centre from 6pm and we would encourage you all to come along on the evening to meet our All Ireland heroes and avail of the opportunity to get a photo with both cups. Also, on the day there will be a number of underage blitz’s taking place in the GAA field where our younger players will have the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of our county stars. We hope to see you all in Coolcappagh on Saturday.

West U21 Football Championship Round 1:

St. Kieran’s 1.10 Shannon Gaels 1.5

The u21 footballers got their west championship campaign underway on Saturday last in wind and rainswept conditions in Athea. Despite the inclement weather conditions the surface in Athea was in immaculate condition and great credit must go to the Athea club for their excellent playing facilities. Fielding a side that was only short two players from the side that won west and county B championship honours in 2017, we began the game the brighter of the two sides with early scores coming from John Hayes, Noel Callanan and Killian Enright to give us an early first half lead playing against a heavy breeze which made conditions extremely difficult. At half time we held a comfortable lead and with the assistance of the elements in the second period it looked as if the game was ours to lose. Alas, the Glin/Gerard Griffins amalgamation made a number of alterations at the interval which certainly strengthened their hand as we found it hard to get back into the pace of the game. Noel Callanan registered our first score of the half as we caught Shannon Gaels on the counter attack to increase our tally to eight points. The game took a major turn when Shannon Gaels found the back of the net following a misjudgement on our part to bring the game back to four points as Shannon Gaels added a further point to their tally. To the lads credit the got back in their rhythm and following an excellent passage of play up front, showing calmness and composure in possession we managed to fashion a free from an acute angle which Dylan Moloney managed to place over the bar off his left to increase our lead to five once again as the game drew closer to a conclusion. At the final whistle there was a sense of relief at having come away with the win following a hard-fought win in atrocious weather conditions. Next up in round two is a clash with Clan na Gael who will undoubtedly provide very stern opposition. When both sides met in the minor championship in 2016 it was the amalgamation side who came away with a comfortable win in Coolcappagh.

U16 Hurling:

Congratulations to the players and management of the U16 hurling team who capped off their season on Sunday last by defeating Askeaton to capture the U16 Division Shield. Following a tense and nail biting encounter the lads emerged victorious by the slenderest of margins to seal the win and secure the clubs first underage hurling title for a number of years. The manner of the win was very pleasing given that when the two sides met earlier in the championship we came out on the wrong side of a heavy defeat, but the players and management worked extremely hard on the training paddock in recent weeks and all the hard work was rewarded on Sunday evening. Well done to the management team of David Woulfe, Donal McEnery and John Ryan on masterminding the win and also to Chris Madigan and Ian Mackessy who provided assistance with training in recent weeks also.
