Rathkeale Intermediates Advance to County Final

Congratulations to Rathkeale, who advance to the County Final after they overcame Gerald Griffins in the Semi Final of the Intermediate Championship last Saturday evening in Newcastlewest. It was the Rathkeale men who settled the quicker, with Eoin Kelly firing over the bar from play in the opening minute. Paul White tagged on a decent point two minutes later, with Eoin O’Donnell joining the scoring party when he fired over on the 9th minute. Gerald Griffins responded when M Thornton scored their first of the day, only for Eoin Kelly to score his second point on the 11th minute. Gerald Griffins pulled a point back before Eoin Kelly continued his early dominance when he rattled the net on the 24th minute, to leave the score reading 1-05 to 0-2. Thornton and Andrew White exchanged points before Gerald Griffins hit their 4th point of the evening through McSweeney. Rathkeale continued their good form however and hit two more points before the halftime interval through Shorten and Morrissey, to leave the score reading Rathkeale 1-08, Gerald Griffins 0-04 at the break. Upon the resumption, both sides traded points, Thornton and Noonan for Gerald Griffins and a brace from Shorten before Thornton kicked a brace of his own to leave only 5 points between the sides. Shorten went on to kick two more fine points either side of a Dara Noonan point. With seven minutes remaining, Gerald Griffin gave their support some optimism, when Brouder found the net to reduce the deficit to 3 points. Thornton added another point, however Rathkeale regained composure and finished strongly with points from Barry Lenihan, Shane Hourigan and Cian Shorten. Final score read Rathkeale 1-15, Gerald Griffins 1-10. Rathkeale, will be fully aware that there are no titles given out just yet, and will continue to work behind the scenes in advance of their upcoming County Final, against Pallasgreen or Galbally, a decider to be decided on Wednesday evening. Commiserations to Gerald Griffins and best of luck to Rathkeale in the final.
