West U21 A Final
Shannon Gaels 1-10
Clann na nGael 0-2
Athea was the setting for the final of this year's U21 West final which pitted us against the newly formed Knockaderry-Monagea-Feoghanagh combination, Clan na Gael. It was a nervous start from both sides but after ten minutes we had a 3 points to 1 lead. In the 20th minute, Brendan Flanagan caught a final high ball in the square and made no mistake with the finish to the back of the net. Flanagan followed up with a pointed free two minutes later putting us firmly in control. Dara Noonan who played well throughout latched onto a pinpoint pass from James Wallace and kicked a fine point. Score at half time, 1-5 to 0-1 to Shannon Gaels.
We didn't ease up and by the time the 46th minute came around, Brendan Flanagan had added two further long range frees off either foot, while Noonan had also tacked on another point to the scoreboard. With ten minutes to go, Martin in goals showed great acrobatics to pull off a wonderful diving save. As the game drew to a close, Jim Liston's accurate crossfield ball was caught by James Wallace, who slotted over the black spot, just before Brendan Flanagan kicked over the last point of the game from a free. Final score Shannon Gaels 1-10 Clan na Gael 0-2.
It was a wonderful team performance with all players showing heart and determination throughout. Even in difficult conditions, the exhibition of clean tackling, high fielding, accurate kick passing and fine score taking were a joy to behold and this young team and their management deserve great credit for this display.

Sympathy

Glin GAA would like to extend their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Pat Martin, who passed away tragically last week. Pat played for the club during the 80s and early 90s and was an outstanding forward. While still a minor, he was a key member of the Glin U21 side that narrowly lost the West final to St. Kieran's in 1985, scoring 1-1 from centre forward in that final. In the years that followed he often lined out alongside brothers Ger and Billy on the U21 and senior teams. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
