Egan, Charles

May 05, 2006
The late Charles Egan This is my unenviable job as P.R.O., of Aughnasheelin GAA Club to announce the death of my fellow work mate and club officer Charles (Charlie) Egan. Charlie passed to his eternal reward surrounded by his loving family and a large circle of friends. What can I say about Charlie? He was one of life's true gentlemen. He received the bad news about 13 months ago, but he lived and enjoyed those thirteen months to the full. Charlie had a good few interests in life and after his family, his next love was everything associated with GAA. He travelled most of Ireland with his brother Pat doing umpire, a job he enjoyed to the last. He came to live in Aughnasheelin 25 years ago after spending a number of years in Dublin. Charlie, his wife Kay and family, got involved in GAA affairs straight away. The amount of work he did in the Club was immense. He took charge of all under age football for a number of years. with his own three sons, Paul, Mark and Cathal playing for those under age teams. No man was prouder when his daughter Sinead returned from Kilarney with her All-Ireland medal having been part of the ballad group. The amount of fundraising he did for the Club, local Lotto, Easter draw and Leitrim Supporter's tickets was way above that call of duty. We can all remember the amount of work he did during the reopening of the pitch in 2003, spending his summer holidays painting dressing rooms and surrounding area without saying a word. He was Assistant Secretary of the Club and also held the same position at Board na nOg at County level. Charlie also spent a number years travelling around the country with referees - fellow Clubman, Seamus Prior, James McCaffrey and Brendan Sammon. We had some great Sunday's away, the craic was always mighty. Charlie you will be sadly missed around Aughnasheelin. At the removal and funeral, the crowds which turned out was proof of the high esteem in which Charlie was held in by all who met him. To his wife Kay, sons Paul, Mark and Cathal, daughter Sinead, brothers Pat and John, relatives and wide circle of friends, deepest sympathy. May you rest in peace Charlie.
