Dunne, Henry

The Late Henry Dunne Pre-deceased by his brother William, the death of Har as he was affectionately Known, caused a huge shock in the locality. Born in 1926 to Bernard and Mary Anne Dunne, Har started work with Laois County Council having completed his education in Clonghadoo NS under Mr Dennis O'Mahoney In 1947 he was promoted to a senior position in the courthouse in Mountmellick where he worked until he retired in 1987. He had a keen interest in religion, farming, politics and in particular, GAA. Kilcavan, with whom he played for many years and then probably with his brothers Charlie and Bernard, were Laois' greatest supporters. Har attended the All Ireland in 1946 and never missed a Laois championship match for the rest of his lifetime in any grade. Har was present to see our minors win in 1996. '97 and 2003. In 1996 hewas on the hill, saw very little of the game and I was enlisted to procuretickets in the stand by whatever means in the future. It was a pleasure to know the man. Jack, Charlie, Nicholas and Bernard, Bridie and Elizabeth will have a void that will remain just that. Whenever GAA people meet, the name Har Dunne will always be acknowledged and remembered for being a vwonderful supporter. In 2000 I met him in Markevich Park in Sligo where he had travelled to see Laois play a challenge match. The space does not allow me to say all that I would like but it is a great honour to have been asked these cupla focail. His mantra no matter how poor Laois played, he always saw something that gave him encouragement for the future. God rest his soul. Tom O'Loughlin Courtesy of the Leinster Express 9 April 2008
