Ring, John
November 30, 2007
John Ring, Tunduff, Abbey leix, who died unexpectedly on Saturday, November 3, was a multi-talented man: hurler, brilliant ploughman, singer, angler and raconteur. He was, in short, the life and soul of any party and he brought laughter and cheer to many lives.
His death, at the age of 72, shocked and saddened his family and the people of Abbeyleix and its hinterland.
Among those who expressed their condolences with the Ring family was Lord (Tom) De Vesci. He wrote: "For me it was a joy and privilege to have known John and the town will be a much poorer place without him."
John spent most of his working life on the DeVesci estate where he developed his interest in wildlife and nature. Earlier, he had been employed by CIE as a driver.
A son of Andy and Marcella Ring, he was a member of a long established and esteemed family. Hurling was in his blood and he togged out for Abbeyliex and, at minor level, for Laois. Football, too, attracted him, and he and his son Mark played together on the same team in the mid 1980's.
John's remains were removed from his residence to The Church of the Holy Rosary in Abbeyliex on Thursday November 8. Following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Jer Ahern PP and Fr Patrick Kehoe CC, interment took place in the adjoining cemetery. The congregation attested to the respect in which John was held.
Mourning him are his wife Agnes; sons Thomas, Jonathan and Mark; daughters Marcella, Ann Marie and Emma; brothers Paddy, Andy and Billy,;m sister Stella; nephews and nieces, relatives and many friends.
