Holohan, Bridie

May 31, 2004
The Late Bridie Holohan Members of CLG Rathdomhnaigh, and indeed Laois Gaels throughout the county were shocked and saddened at the unexpected death of Bridie Holohan who died on Friday, May 7th, 2004. After her family, Bridie's great love and passion was Gaelic Games with which she was associated all her life. Her family name was synonymous with CLG Rathdomhnaigh since the foundation of the Association. Her father Jack captained Rathdowney to a number of county titles, and was a member of the Laois team which won the All Ireland hurling final of 1915. Her brothers Paddy and Jimmy were the main driving force for many years within the club, particularly at juvenile level. Bridie will be remembered fondly by all that knew her. If ever there was a woman who was full of life and energy, and imbued with the joys of living and sharing, that was Bridie Holohan. But she will be remembered most of all for her connection with the GAA. Bridie was Rathdowney's 'No 1' supporter, a familiar figure at venues all over the county in support of her beloved red and green. At her funeral a friend remarked that if Rathdowney were playing and they had only one supporter at the game it surely would be Bridie Holohan. She was loyal to the last. She took an active interest in the most important sector of players - the youth. She took great pleasure and pride at the happiness, development and success of the generation of players that represented the club. She was always there to offer advice and encourage younger players. She earned their respect, and her opinions were respected and valued. One individual does not make a club. But, it is still true to say that Bridie Holohan typified more than anyone else the spirit of Rathdowney. As the fella says "it won't be the same without Bridie." All Rathdowney Gaels feel saddened at her loss and join with her friends everywhere in extending sincere sympathy to her family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
