The Late Michael (Mick) Twomey
The communities of Portlaoise and the surrounding areas are all the poorer as a result of the death of one of its most liked and well known characters, Micheal (Mick) Twomey late of Ballina, just two miles outside the town.
Michael Twomey died on Wednesday, November 27 in the Regional Hospital, Portlaoise after a long illness. His remains were removed from his residence on St Peter and Paul's Church, Portlaoise on Friday evening, November 29. Burial took place at the new cemetery, Ballyfin following 10am Mass on Saturday.
Michael was a good humoured, hard working man, whose passion for sporting pursuits, particularly hurling, was known to all. He was a lifelong member of Portlaoise GAA and hurled for many years on its teams up to senior level. He had the distinction of winning four minor hurling medals in a row, with the Rovers team that catered for Portlaoise GAA teams of the 1940's. He later won a junior championship medal with Portlaoise in 1965.
Michael attended every game he could manage and took a keen interest in proceedings, whether at juvenile club level or at All-Ireland level. Indeed it is estimated that he attended no less than ninety All-Ireland finals during his lifetime.
Aside from GAA interests, Michael loved saving the turf on the bog and tending his garden. He was also a keen card player and supporter of local charity events. He worked with CIE, Odlums and more recently with Telecom Eireann, from which he retired in 1992. Telecom and Portlaoise GAA jointly provided a guard of honour at his removal to SS Peter and Paul's Church, Portlaoise. Burial took place at Ballyfin.
A man of sincere religious conviction, Michael was a regular pilgrim to Knock Shrine. His good natured and charitable personality endeared him to his neighbours and so many friends. He will be sadly missed, especially by his wife Norah and devoted family. Sincere sympathy is extended.
