Quigley, Tom

October 15, 2013
It has been my great privilege to have been a close friend of Tom Quigley who passed away so suddenly on September 6.
There was widespread shock and sadness in the local wider community when news of his sudden passing spread. As large numbers came to pay their respects and to offer support to his devastated family whom Tom adored, his wife Breda, sons Tim, Robert and Tomas, his wife Jacinta, his grandchildren and his sisters.
Many stories were told as Tom had a great gift of story and joke telling and had a great sense of humour and lifted the spirits of the many people he came into contact with. Tom was a great neighbour and was involved in every aspect of community life including the Parish, GAA, IFA, hall committee etc and was always willing and available to assist and volunteer his services.
Tom's great love was the GAA and I attended every All-Ireland Hurling and Football Final with him for well over 35 years.
We had made plan's to attend this year's hurling final but I know watched it from the best seat in the house. Tom was an exceptional farmer who was noted for his neatness and good farming practices and he was happiest working on the farm.
He also enjoyed our weekly game of cards was considered one of the best 25 players around and has trophies to prove it. Tom will be missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him and his infectious good humour lifted many people who might have been feeling a little down and always felt better having spent time in his company.
I spent many enjoyable times in Tom's company as we travelled to Laois games all over the country and Quigley's was always the focal point on Monday's as games were analysed by all the people who stopped for a chat with Tom.
To try to sum up, Tom, I would say was at the heart of all that was good in rural Ireland and was a great influence for good particularly in young people who had had great affinity for.
What we'll miss most is his wisdom, with and friendly wave to everyone who passed by.
I know Breda and the family strong faith will help them cope with their great loss.
So till wee meet again, Farewell Tom
I still cannot believe it, that you have really gone, although you had reached 83, you were always 21.
