The death took place at the Midlands Regional Hospital, Portlaoise on Monday January 16 of Patrick (Paddy) O'Brien, Castlefleming, Errill (formerly Inchicore, Dublin) and Borris in Ossory. His remains reposed at Guilfoyle's Funeral Home, Castletown until removal on Tuesday evening to St Canice's Church, Borris in Ossory. Following his funeral mass on Wednesday January 18 burial took place in St Canice's Cemetery, Borris in Ossory.

The late Paddy, who was predeceased by his wife Hannah (nee O'Byrne) four years ago is deeply regretted by his brother Christy (Borris in Ossory), sister Mary (Italy), sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Paddy was a native of Borris in Ossory but lived most of his life in Dublin where he was employed by Guinness for over 40 years. He was very involved in the GAA and hurled with Borris in Ossory and Faughs clubs and with the Dublin and Laois hurling teams. In 1949 he lined out in Croke Park with Laois in the All Ireland final against Tipperary. He and his wife Hannah retired to Castlefleming, Errill a few years ago where he continued to enjoy one of his favourite hobbies, gardening. After Hannah's death in 2008 Borris in Ossory Paddy became ill and was hospitalised until his death.

His coffin was draped with the Borris in Ossory GAA flag and the Laois jersey and members of Borris in Ossory GAA club formed a guard of honour at the funeral. Among the large attendance were many sporting colleagues of Paddy's including Paddy McCormack from Rathdowney and Paddy Lalor from Abbeyleix, the only two surviving members of the 1949 Laois senior hurling team.
