McEvoy, Michael

January 01, 2001
Stradbally and Laois GAA is mourning the loss of one of its most loyal and faithful servants with the recent death of Michael McEvoy. Michael served as Secretary and Treasurer in a combined role on Laois Juvenile board for over twenty years. The softly spoken Stradbally man had great friends and admirers around the county and beyond. He was one of the old style GAA officials. His accounts produced before Annual Conventions were his pride and joy - scrupulously detailed with every single item outlined. He had a wonderful knack of playing down teams and you certainly knew Stradbally had a great chance when Michael McEvoy suggested that they wouldn't keep the ball kicked out to the opposition. He served as a Laois underage football selector during his tenure on the juvenile board and was a noted shrewd judge of the big ball. Michael played football during his youth with Ballaydams, and worked with Laois County Council until his retirement. He was one of the great promoters of Laois football among the youth of the county. Michael was pre-deceased by his wife Winifred and his passing is deeply mourned by his sons, daughters, grandchildren, sons in law, daughters in law, newphews, nieces and a large circle of friends to whom we tender our deepest sympathy. Michael's grandson, Darragh, lined out for Stradbally in last Sunday's SF final. - Courtesy of the Leinster Express October 2001
