Critchley still making history

January 24, 2020

IT Carlow manager Pat Critchley

In 1985, Pat Critchley became Laois' one and only hurling All Star.

Fast-forward 35 years and he's still making history. On Wednesday afternoon, the Portlaoise man coached the Scoil Chríost Rí girls to their first All-Ireland U19 'A' basketball title before guiding IT Carlow to their first-ever Sigerson Cup final appearance following a 2-9 to 1-9 victory over Letterkenny IT that night.

"I'm delighted for the lads. They're a great bunch and we're having a great run of it," the popular PE teacher told HE GAA.

"They have great spirit about them, great character about them. We were four points up when that goal went in but they just keep going to the final whistle and we just about got over the line."

Critchley will be aiming to break more ground when IT Carlow face hosts DCU in the decider next Wednesday night.

The Allianz Football and Hurling Leagues are back this weekend and so is the Hogan Stand Match Tracker. Join us on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon for live score and updates from the opening rounds.
