Champions stunned

July 25, 2018

The Laois senior hurling championship got off to a exciting start last weekend.

County champions Camross suffered a shock defeat to Castletown Gaels as the black and ambers went down by 1-18 to 1-12.

This leaves them under immense pressure to come out of the group as the other two teams, Rathdowney-Errill and Clough-Ballacolla played out an exciting draw (2-19 to 3-16).

Camross had only lifted the Division One league title the week before and despite missing a few players, were still expected to win their opening game.

But credit to Castletown Gaels who fought valiantly throughout and deserved their victory. Camross can get their campaign back on track with a win over Rathdowney-Errill on the weekend after next, but that will be a tough encounter for them.

Should they lose, Camross could well be heading into a relegation battle, so the onus is on a win in the next round.

In the other group, Borris-Kilcotton cruised to victory over Ballyfin Gaels, while Ballinakill produced an impressive performance to see off the challenge of Abbeyleix.
