Ladies: Trillick set-up Tourlestrane final date

November 18, 2018

Glanmire were 2-13 to 2-8 winners over Trillick in the All-Ireland Ladies Junior Club Football Semi-Final.

Glanmire (Cork) 2-13

Trillick (Tyrone) 2-8

Glanmire had to withstand a late Trillick challenge to book their place in next month's All-Ireland Ladies Junior Club Football Final.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Cork and Munster champions led 2-10 to 0-2, as Kate Hannon’s goal 52 seconds after the resumption and Sarah O’Brien’s major three minutes later sent them into a commanding lead.

Glanmire had built on a 0-6 to 0-1 interval advantage but would have to work hard before booking a final slot with Sligo’s Tourlestrane on December 9.
A strong final quarter saw Tyrone outfit Trillick close a 14 point deficit back to five, 2-11 to 2-6 with five minutes remaining.

Cathleen Kelly’s 41st minute goal and a 45th minute effort from county star Emma Brennan made for an enthralling finish at Páirc Uí Dhonnghaile in Trillick.
But two pointed frees from Glanmire’s excellent corner forward Niamh McAllen, as the game entered injury time, put an end to Trillick’s hopes of staging a remarkable comeback.

The hosts can still hold their heads high after pushing the impressive East Cork outfit all the way.

McAllen (0-7) and Kate Hannon (1-5) combined for 1-12 of their Glanmire’s total, as the pair produced impressive displays.

The game had a very different look about when the visitors led 0-6 to no score after 24 minutes and although Trillick’s defence was working hard, inspired by full back Nuala Kelly, they rarely got past the half-way line.

Trillick’s first point came in the 27th minute through Cathleen Kelly, a goal chance that saw her effort sail over the bar.

On the resumption, Hannon found the back of the net after 51 seconds, and Glanmire followed up with a second goal from Sarah O’Brien three minutes later.

That looked to be that but Trillick ran Glanmire all the way before the visitors ensured a final berth.

They’ll now look to emulate Cork outfit Aghada’s achievements in 2017 by landing the All-Ireland Junior Club crown.
