February 08, 2013The death took place last week after a long illness of Mr Paul Delaney (67), son of the late James and Mary Delaney, publicans Patrick Street Upper, Kilkenny.
The late Mr Delaney was brother of Seamus Delaney of Patrick Street Upper, Ned, May, Nancy and Joan.
He was educated at St Patrick's De La Salle and St Kieran's College. He was a useful hurler in his day, and he won a minor hurling championship with St Canice's. He also hurled with the now defunct Foulkstown club.
He played football with Clann na Gael and he was a noted boxer with St Patrick's boxing club, winning Leinster and Leix/Kilkenny titles.
He worked all his life as a tradesman with Cork County Council. He served his time in Callaghan and Connolly, Kieran Street, Kilkenny and he also worked in Connollys garage.
A large crowd from Kilkenny attended the funeral, including John McGuinness TD and Cllr Joe Malone, former Kilkenny hurlers Phil 'Fan' Larkin and Richie Power. Jim O'Sullivan, a former Gaelic games correspondent with the Irish Examiner, was also among the attendance.
The removal of the remains was attended by Dr Buckley, Bishop of Cork, Fr Jim Killeen, a former secretary to the Bishop of Cloyne. Mass was con-celebrated by Fr Dan Carroll, St Patrick's and Fr Robert Brophy in the Way of the Cross church, Togher. The burial was in Killingley cemetery, Ballygarvan.
Following the mass the Rose of Mooncoin was sang as a tribute to a man who was as proud as any could be about his native county.
Other surviving cousins include the Mulhall family, Goslingtown. Delaney family, Lower Conahy, Phelan family, Jenkinstown, Michael Lanigan, Joe Delaney family, Ballincollig, Ramsbottom family, Timahoe.
