Kilkenny legend DJ Carey has expressed concern over the future of the Fitzgibbon Cup.

The IT Carlow senior hurling manager believes that club and county commitments are forcing students to make a choice.

And Carey told the Carlow Nationalist that it was possible if colleges can’t get the players to commit, then they could withdraw their scholarships.

“Unfortunately, Fitzgibbon hurling is struggling now,” stressed Carey. “Not necessarily because the players are not there but because the players are not being released.

“This year, because there are a lot of players involved with county teams and county teams are in hard training and playing the odd match, we couldn’t get our players.

“Most teams involved with Fitzgibbon are the same because of the way the calendar has gone now. We are not overly affected with scholarships, but a lot of players around the country have lost scholarships in colleges with hurling and football,” added the Kilkenny under-20 manager.
