Kilkenny boss in plea to save IHC

The All-Ireland intermediate hurling championship trophy.

Kilkenny manager David O'Neill says the All-Ireland intermediate hurling championship needs to be preserved.

The championship's future is in considerable doubt after only two teams entered this year with Cork beating Kilkenny in the final at Nowlan Park on Saturday.

"It is a great competition to help players make their way on to county senior teams," O'Neill claimed in the Irish Independent.

"Thirteen of the Kilkenny players who featured in the championship against Limerick recently played at this level, and I have no doubt it helped them progress their career.

"It is a championship worth continuing, and Kilkenny will certainly be interested in it going forward."
