Pleas have been made in Kilkenny for clubs to provide more people to train as referees in the county.

There is a mass shortage of new referees coming through the ranks in Kilkenny as the age profile of the current crop is higher than average.

Referees Administrator Pat Hayes told the Kilkenny People that even though they are not at crisis stage just yet, they will be sooner rather than later.

"If we don't do something we will be in serious trouble in the near future," stressed Hayes. "We have to do something. We have to get people from somewhere."

There are nine clubs in the county that don't supply any referees and the aim now is to encourage them to do so before the situation becomes a serious issue.
