The late Vincent Hanly
There was widespread shock felt throughout the Parish of Carbury and surrounding areas when the news broke of the death of Vincent Hanly last week.
Vincent was very well-known throughout the entire County through his involvement in Carbury GAA Club.
Having spent almost fifty years as a primary school teacher in Carbury, he touched the lives of many, many people. He put a lot of the pupils through the schools and they turned up to say their last farewells to him at his funeral in Derrinturn on Saturday last.
Members of Carbury GAA club formed a Gaurd of Honour at Kilshanroe Church.
The Carbury Church Choir, of which Vincent was a member, sang beautiful hymns at his funeral mass.
His life-long friend the well known singer Mr.Sean O'Shea was also in attendance.
The following is a brief look at the life of Vincent Hanly, whose passing leaves a void in the parish of Carbury.
Fr.John Fitzpatrick P.P said at the Funeral Mass " it will be hard to believe the place without him, our loss is Heaven's gain."
Vincent Hanly was born on 30th January 1933 in Eyeries, Castletownbere, West Cork.
He went to Kilmakoen National school in the 40's and then received a scholarship to train as a teacher in Drumcondra in the 1950's.
His first teaching post was De La Salle Brothers in Kildare Town it was here he met his wife Maura.
To further his teaching career, he then had to choose either Clane or Carbury, so he chose Carbury and it was in 1959 he began his first teaching post in St.Oliver Plunkett National School, Killina, Carbury never looked back.
